Freshman Piper Pickrell told us her favorite movie is Fox and the Hound. This adventure comedy movie was filmed in 1981 and tells the story of a baby fox who got adopted by an old lady whose next-door neighbor adopted a puppy hound dog. They grew up together but as time went on, the owner of the hound dog turned him into a hunting dog and wanted the dog to catch the fox that lived next door. Pickrell says this is her favorite movie because she grew up watching it with her dad. She rates this movie a 10/10 and would recommend it to anybody who is looking for a movie to watch.
11th grader Paige Allenbaugh said that one of her top movies is 2004’s The Notebook. The film is a classic romance where characters Allie and Noah fall in love, but their parents do not approve. Noah ends up going to fight in World War ll. In his absence, Allie falls in love with another man. When Noah returns home days before Allie’s marriage, it becomes clear that their romance is anything but over. Allenbaugh recommends this movie and even rates it a 1000/10. The film is one of Hollywood’s iconic tear-jerkers which Allenbaugh says is because Allie and Noah “die together peacefully by each other’s side.”
Sophomore Thomas Hamilton mentioned that his favorite movie is the family comedy Robots. It’s about a young idealistic inventor who travels to a big city and joins his inspirations company, only to find himself opposing its sinister new management. Hamilton would definitely recommend this movie and he rates it a 10/10. Hamilton also mentioned that it is his favorite movie because “the robots are funny.”
9th Grader Jared Baroza says Hacksaw Ridge is at the top of his list of favorite war and drama movies. Made in 2016, the film depicts a man committed to non-violence who saved 75 men’s lives in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII without firing a single shot. Baroza recommends this movie and rates it a 9/10. Baroza said he enjoys war films and is connected to Hacksaw Ridge’s main character because of his Christianity.
Freshman Kylie Scarbrough-Holly had said her top movie is Fantastic Mr. Fox. This movie is about a fox, Mr. Fox, who breaks a promise to his wife and raids the farms of their human neighbors, Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. Giving in to his animal instincts endangers not only his marriage but also the lives of his family and their animal friends. When the farmers force Mr. Fox and company deep underground, he has to resort to his natural craftiness to rise above the opposition. This comedy and adventure movie was rated a 10/10 by Scarbrough-Holly and she says she also highly recommends it. Scarbrough-Holly said she loves the film because she “grew up watching it with my family” and “whenever I watch it I think of my family.”
Catalina Cowen is a freshman in the Ukiah High school journalism class. She loves baking and hanging out with friends. She joined journalism because she likes writing about things that happen in the town around her. Catalina was born in Ukiah, California which is a big reason why she wanted to write about the city she is from. She looks forward to writing for the Ukiah High School Journalism class in her future years in High school.
