Whether your parents drop you off at the front of campus or you walk to your first class of the day many may have seen UHS senior Ani McKay’s blue toaster. The 2009 Scion XB is nearly always parked at the front of the lot awaiting its next adventure.
The cube-shaped car has witnessed many of McKay’s treasured high school memories. When asked what her favorite thing about her vehicle was she described fitting her entire friend group into her car. It has always been “THE car” in her group, where they have gathered and collected a lifetime of laughs. She expressed that, “it may be a toaster but it fits more than one would think.”
McKay also mentions her memories regarding the car and the California coast. Her favorite memories are riding “up and down the coast looking to go surfing with my dad.” Her love for surfing has impacted her car greatly. The only modification she plans on making to the vehicle is the addition of permanent surf racks. Other than that McKay believes that in its simplicity “it is perfect as is.”
Now, although she does not plan on having many modifications to her current vehicle McKay does consider herself a part of the car community explaining that, “I’ve always been interested in cars but never knew how to express it.”

Her love of cars came from her parents who are not only bikers but have also driven toasters. She “always thought they were cool” and it was always her plan to have one when she grew up. As the day that she would get behind the wheel grew closer she debated getting a truck but “the mileage is better with my car,” being a high school student the car was more practical for her needs.
In McKay’s final comment about her blue toaster, she commented on the car’s legacy. She and the people in her life “have many memories held within those four doors.”
Catalina Cowen is a freshman in the Ukiah High school journalism class. She loves baking and hanging out with friends. She joined journalism because she likes writing about things that happen in the town around her. Catalina was born in Ukiah, California which is a big reason why she wanted to write about the city she is from. She looks forward to writing for the Ukiah High School Journalism class in her future years in High school.
