The Ukiah High News team would like to congratulate Junior Nicole Muniz and Senior Maritza Jacobs, the dynamic single players of the UHS Tennis team. The duo participated and won 3rd place in the annual doubles tournament at Santa Rosa Junior College on November 1st and 2nd.

Competing in the singles tournament a week before and not having much success, the duo decided to participate in the doubles tournament where Muniz and Jacobs dominated and won all of their games on November 1st earning them a return on November 2nd for another round of the tournament.

With more wins on the 2nd, the Wildcats moved to the semifinals, facing a tough match against Marillo Carillo. Unfortunately,  the Wildcats fell short.

In their subsequent match against Windsor, Jacobs and Muniz dominated securing the bronze medal.

Nicole Muniz has played tennis since her Freshman year, and appreciates the sport for the players being “nice and laid back.” She expressed her love for tennis and how “there is always a lot to learn.” Muniz highlights the pleasure of having Jacobs, coach her during the tournament.

Approaching the game with a “not exactly positive” attitude, Muniz admits to her lack of confidence going into the tournament and notes that “I didn’t expect to place after I saw all our competitors, but it was a fun experience.”

Maritza Jacobs has played tennis for seven years, playing number 1 singles for the past two seasons. She values the team’s support and their ability to work together for a fun practice environment.

Initially, she felt open-minded about the tournament once she and Muniz began winning and felt “more confident in our skills and strategies.”

The tournament marked the end of Jacobs’s 4-year journey with the Ukiah High School team. Placing in the tournament was not only exciting for her but was a nice close High School tennis career.
