Many Ukiah High Wildcats were lucky enough to look skywards today and catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse as it passed over California. UHS News spoke with students and staff about the unique celestial event.
According to NASA. the Wildcats saw what is called a “partial eclipse” and the United States will not be visited by a total eclipse for another 20 years.
9th Grader Christopher Medrano said “it was kinda weird” to experience the solar eclipse. When asked about what he thought he said, “It looked like the Sun had gotten bit.”

Freshman Amaya Upchurch was thankful to be able to witness the solar eclipse. When asked what she thought about the celestial event, Upchurch said “I mean, how wonderful is it that I get to witness this in my lifetime? How cool is it that the stars literally aligned for me to witness something so unique?”
Drama teacher Chris Douthit put aside his regularly scheduled lesson plans and took his class outside to view the eclipse. Mr.Douthit said, “We can do theater any day but we can only see an eclipse every once in a while so we should take advantage of it.”
Another 9th grader, Kylie Scarbrough-Holly, had brought up that she was one of the lucky students to witness the solar eclipse. When asked her thoughts on the eclipse, Scarbrough-Holly said, “I was with my drama class, it was weird though because it went from the right of the sun to the center, and I looked at it by accident it kind of burned.”
