In the past year, a committed crew of Ukiah High School teachers have been the driving force behind a new dance team called the Golden Cats and an innovative department of physical education dedicated to dance.

The Golden Cats and the Dance Department will showcase their labors Spring show “Moments In Our  Lives” on April 12th at 7:00 pm in the UHS cafeteria.

The Golden Cats Dance Team, with Biology teacher Rachel Porter as its executive coach and English teacher Kate McCarthy as its assistant, has put in hard work and is set to finish their first season with over a dozen performances under their belt. They performed at football games, pep rallies, Ukiah’s Annual Pumpkin Fest, and fundraisers. They even went on to join Ukiah High’s Winter and Spring shows performing alongside band, choir, and drama.!

Coach Porter also runs the Dance department here at UHS which includes three elective classes performing at the Winter and Spring Shows. They even went to Pomolita and Eagle Peak along with some Golden Cats to show middle school students what options they have when coming to UHS.

When designing this upcoming Spring Show, the dance classes pitched and voted on the theme and, “Moments in Our Lives” came out on top. The show is a series of routines meant to lead the audience through moments most people encounter. The ambitious production required the dancers to choreograph 22 routines.

When asked about the spirit of the upcoming Spring Show, Coach Porter said, “Each of us are humans that go through love, heartbreak, leaving home, empowerment, tremendous pressure, and moments of nostalgia.”

If you’re interested in joining the dance department you can speak with your counselor when choosing classes for next year! If you’d like to try out for the Golden Cats Dance Team there are open studios posted on Instagram! Try-out dates are May 8th, 9th, and 10th, at 4 pm!
